Join artist, woodworker, and Makeville instructor Bridget Conway for a presentation on her upcoming public sculpture, exhibited as part of the Harlem Sculpture Gardens 2025 exhibition..
Following her presentation, Bridget will demonstrate the shou sugi ban technique she'll use to finish her piece. Shou sugi ban, also called yakisugi, is a traditional Japanese finishing technique that preserves wood by charring, cleaning, and oiling the surface. The technique can be used to make outdoor projects more resilient to the elements, without the use of heavy duty or harmful finishes.
Launched in 2024, the Harlem Sculpture Gardens is a groundbreaking initiative transforming historical Morningside, St. Nicholas, and Jackie Robinson parks into a vibrant exhibition space. Be sure to visit Bridget’s piece, and check out the sculpture garden in St. Nicholas park from May-October of 2025. You can find more information at https://harlemsculpturegardens.com/.
The presentation will begin at 10:30AM on Saturday, April 19th. Hope to see you there!
