Lathe Certification

Lathe certification is required for anyone looking to book time to work independently on our community shop lathes.

The certification is a test, not a class. You'll need to demonstrate an understanding of how to set up and operate the lathe, methods for mounting your work on the lathe, as well as best practices for safe turning, proper use of the tools and tool sharpening.

When using the lathes after certification, you must bring your own set of carving tools. Chucks, spindles, and other materials are available for your use. If you’d like to sharpen your tools at Makeville, your tools must be made of High Speed Steel (HSS).
