During a long WFH period of my career, I really had a strong desire to do something with my hands. A friend told me to check out a community woodworking shop called Makeville. I checked out the website and watch all of the videos and signed myself up for the 101 class. I was a bit nervous as I'd never really built anything (usable) so I wasn't sure what to expect. The 101 class was great! The instructor, Stephen, was very knowledgeable and brought a ton of experience to his teachings, including many mistakes he had made during his time as a woodworker. This helped the students avoid making the same mistakes. The class was a diverse crew which told me that this shop attracted diverse members. I was hooked! During my time as a member, I made a few things and learned how all of the machines worked. The staff and members were all very generous with their knowledge so it was pretty common for me to ask someone for help if I ran out of ideas of how to join something to connect this or that. Everyone was encouraging and inquisitive. There was always more to learn! I also just loved that most of the staff were bad-ass women. It was a message that woodworking is for anyone, from any background, and any skill level.

I joined Makeville in 2019 and since then it has become my creative oasis on many weekends. For a few hours, I can spend valuable time away from a screen and make something with my hands. It's a true joy to work in the sunny shop crafting, problem solving, and connecting with the diverse community of makers, hobbyists, and real pros. It has also made me a better woodworker, by taking the time to carefully plan out projects to optimize my scheduled time on the machines.

I’ve taken two classes at Makeville now, and both times were jam-packed with both theoretical and practical content. Steven, who instructed both, ensures that students come away with not just the practice and the “how”, but also background and the “why”. The space is well maintained, well lit, and carefully organized, with lessons led in a separate area from the main studio. With the thoughtful emphasis on safe use of the tools, respect for the space and one another, and the ease of studio booking process, I would not hesitate to recommend Makeville to anyone!

I've had a great experience exploring my new hobby at Makeville. It's hard to find a flexible, well stocked, and supportive place to tap into physical work in the city. I especially appreciate all of the shop techs that keep the place safe and functional, and offer me help when I'm working on my projects.

The Makeville Studio has become an essential part of my New York experience. Access to tools and space are naturally important but the always helpful tips and feedback I get from the staff have been invaluable in my development as a woodworker.

Makeville is such an incredible place! There are several monthly classes for people to learn how to work with wood and to safely use all the machines. Members have access to all the tools a person could need for woodworking, and studio reservations are affordable. The shop monitors are great— they provide you the space to work on your project independently, but are available for guidance if needed. It really is a great place— it allows people (especially those living in a NYC apartment) the opportunity to pursue woodworking as a hobby.

Makeville studio changed my life. I'm not kidding. I don't know of another resource so well stocked and outfitted with excellent machinery, talented instructors, knowledgeable daily staff and a really enjoyable community of folks.  I can't say enough positive things about it.

I took Intro to Woodworking 6 years ago, and ever since Makeville has been a fantastic space not just to grow my skills but to make friends who share my passion.  As an IT professional who spends his work day in front of screens and dealing with code, the experience of observing and touching wood, delighting the use of precision tools (while exercising caution against injury) and enjoying the projects I have completed over the years provide a welcome and life-giving contrast to the virtual world of my work.

I love the instructors and classes at Makeville!  I have been able to gain wood working skills I always wanted to pursue.  It is a safe and non threatening environment to learn things you didn’t think possible.

Makeville is an amazing resource for me. I’m working on my 3rd violin, and without the resources Makeville provides along with the technical assistance always available, I wouldn’t be able to complete my projects. Thank you Robyn and all the talented and skilled staff at Makeville.

No need to fill your apartment with sawdust—Makeville has all the equipment you need. Their machines can handle any project, and they even sell wood on-site. The staff is super knowledgeable and always ready to help you use the machines safely.

My wife got me a gift certificate for Makeville’s Plant Stand workshop for Father’s Day and I was so delighted with the class. The instructor Bridgette had a high level of knowledge and exposed us to a wide range of tools in a very short time, which impressed me, even as an intermediate woodworker. I then brushed up on my skills with a lathe lesson from Lisa who consulted with me on my next project, as well as got certified in the shop so I could start booking time as a member. The staff strikes a great balance between maintaining a laid-back, helpful vibe, while still running a tight ship. I am always looking out for their next workshop so I can expand my skill set and strongly recommend Makeville to anyone just starting out or who has some skills but wants to go deeper on their woodworking journey!

I’ve taken two classes at Makeville Studios now and both have been such an incredible experience. My first class was the intro to woodworking class, which was the perfect balance between the instructor walking you through the process step-by-step, but also having the trust to let you try the techniques you’ve learned on your own (under supervision of course). After the intro class I immediately signed up for the shaker table class, again with instructor Steven, and it was the perfect follow-up to gain the confidence on the machinery in the workshop. The classes I’ve taken with Makeville have inspired me to get my workshop certification and plan new projects to create on my own. I will definitely be back for more classes to further my skills in the future!

Makeville has helped me take basic skills and become much more proficient (and safe) in the shop.  Great environment for learning thanks to professional and warm instructors.
